We're nothing if not predictable here at Popsiculture, so the with the release of the Doctor Who Christmas special today there are no prizes for guessing our DVD and Blu-ray release of the week. A Christmas Carol was a particularly strong festive outing for the Doctor, a time-travelling twist on the Dickens classic.
Michael Gambon gives a strong performance as the miserly Scrooge character, and Katherine Jenkins is good as the love interest, while Matt Smith continues to make the role of the Doctor his own. If there was one (predictable) complaint from me it would be the lack of screen time for the delectable Amy Pond, but you can't have everything.
Bonus features are at a bit of a premium, both on the DVD and Blu-ray, but you do get the Doctor Who Confidential, essentially a making-of documentary, and the full Doctor Who at the Proms 2010 performance as a little extra. And you aren't forking out too much, with the DVD available for just under £10, and the Blu-ray just over, at Amazon.
And if you like Doctor Who, then the chances are you'll be interested in the third series of Merlin released this week too, bigger, better and increasingly successful, Merlin seems to be going from strength to strength.
For the non-nerd audience though, assuming there still are any reading, the big film releases are The Other Guys, the Will Ferrell-Mark Wahlberg cop comedy, which was a bit of a surprise hit last year, and Devil, an elevator-based thriller (now that's niche) 'from the mind of' M. Night Shyamalan.
Finally, I should point out the release of Brotherhood Season 2 on DVD, the Showtime crime drama series starring Jasons Clarke and Isaacs as the brothers operating on opposite sides of the law. I recommended the first season a few months back, and I'm looking forward to continuing the story in the second season.
